Lewis Environmental attends Halifax Area School District’s Environmental Day.

On Thursday, May 27, 2021, Lewis Environmental’s Regional Manager from the New Cumberland/Bloomsburg Office, Charlie Bisking and Health & Safety Director, Doug Everlof attended the Halifax Area School District’s Environmental Day.

Charlie and Doug addressed Middle School students from the 6th, 7th and 8th grade. The day consisted of seven, 40-minute presentations to the students on topics of oil recovery, hazmat response, Covid-19 disinfection and a tour of our Emergency Response Trailer.

Students had the opportunity to observe three separate demonstrations. The first demonstration involved a little chemistry 101 with the students as Charlie & Doug discussed the difference between an acid material and a base material. A sample of vinegar (acidic material) and clorox liquid (base material) was used along with pH strips to demonstrate the color change when introduced to an acid or a base material.

The second demonstration involved educating the students on the use of a 5-gas meter, how the meter operates and what gasses the meter is capable of reading. Students saw firsthand how the 5-gas meter reacts to diesel fuel when taking readings. On the last demonstration, Charlie Bisking explained to the students the difference between chemical absorbent pads and oil only absorbent pads in water. With the use of motor oil (poured into a container of drinking water) students witnessed first hand how effective oil absorbent pads are in reclaiming all the motor oil in the water.

The students presented numerous questions about our business and were thoroughly impressed with our equipment and our response capabilities.
